Snow Storm, March 18--20, 2003The snow started falling on Monday morning and when we woke up Tuesday morning there was about 18" on the ground and our roof. Jacquie and I shoveled for over three hours to clear the driveway and the boardwalks to the garage, but it has been a losing battle. When we came inside, we were both soaked to the skin in melted snow and sweat. My hat was dripping water off of the bill and my jumpsuit must have weighed an extra 2 lbs. from all the water. But neither of us were cold, but our arms got immediately sore once we stopped. More snow is coming down at about 1" per hour with a lot more forecast. Will post more pictures as the storm progresses. Update Wednesday mornng: heavy snow falling at 11 am with about 9" of new overnight. Estimate we have 34" on the ground. Have posted new pics under some of the ones from Tuesday so you can see the difference. Added some pics of our deer friends at the bottom. Update: Thursday night, total now is 50" and it's started snowing again! Jacquie & I have shoveled about 4 hours each of the last 3 days and are very sore. Had the back boardwalk from the house to the garage cleared and we were working on the driveway when we heard a swish and dull thud from the back of the house. J went to see and started yelling. A massive avalanche of snow had come off the roof and buried the boardwalk under 4' of packed hard snow. Took us a half-hour of hard work to shovel it up and over the 5' pile of snow already next to the boardwalk. At least there is lots of moisture content and should help the trees and our well for this summer... Final Update the following week: Neighbors are reporting over 50" and the local newspaper reported 54" in our immediate area. County did a good job plowing us out on Saturday evening after 6 days and leaving very little snow on the road surface. Only had one day of mud, then another little snowfall of 3" on the 27th that made for a day of mud. Only problem is coming back home as it is uphill a bit so I speed up to about 30mph to blast thru the final quarter mile to get to the driveway. Truck is pretty nasty but it will wash off. Very little water is visible as the snow melts so it must be soaking in, which is great for our well and the pine trees. The deer in the pictures all survived and are back every morning for a handout of corn, oats and barley feed. |

View from the front door of the our little travel trailer and the garage on Tuesday and then on Wednesday mornings.
View from the front
door after an avalanche of snow from the roof came down. The pile is 4'
(1.3m) above the deck which is 3' (1m) above the ground.
View from the street
which will be a sea of mud when this all melts!
The rails of the rustic fence by road have almost grown together. On Wed., they had grown together.
Looking north & then west on Wed. from
the dining room window at the heavily laden Ponderosa pines.
The bottom of the mailbox is 44" above the road, but now is only about 6"!
Our deer pets are having a tough time getting through the deep snow. This little fawn was up to its back and had a very hard time trying to turn around. Take a look at this forecast: <http://www.crh.noaa.gov/forecasts/COZ078.php> |
